Animal Rights & The Bible - Part 1

Over the last few months a story has unfolded regarding the Shawnee Mission Park deer culling. The Johnson County Park and Recreation District determined that the population of deer would cause a negative impact to the environment, endangering the deer's health.

When word got out about the deer culling, it caused animal rights protests - mainly people that were lead by an animal rights activist named Jason Miller who displayed a severed deer head in front of the administration office of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District. He organized protests to block traffic, poured a bucket of cow’s blood on himself, filed temporary restraining orders and personally delivered a complaint letter to the director of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District at his home. The delivery of the letter resulted in a court order of protection against Miller, in which he broke and was recently arrested for in January 2010. He is currently out on bail.

Despite all of this, the culling took place early in November 2009 and the meat was donated to Harvesters and the skins to a veterans leather program.

Jason Miller is Founder of the "Bite Club of KC" and on their website it states: "Bite Club of KC is an independent, zero-profit animal rights and liberation activism group. Founded on 7/5/09, Bite Club’s mission is to amplify the efforts of individual animal rights activists in the Kansas City area by bringing them together, to educate the public about veganism and animal liberation in an attempt to gain their support and participation, and to wage campaigns to defend nonhuman animals who are under attack. Campaign tactics will include educating the exploiters, negotiating with the exploiters, speaking out for the victimized nonhuman animals through the media, demonstrating against the exploiters, informing the exploiters’ neighbors of their barbaric activities, and potentially engaging in civil disobedience."

I highly recommend not visiting the Bite Club's website due to the fact that they are modifying people's comments that disagree with them and adding profane, disparaging remarks to their posts.

A further look into Jason Miller's activities on the Internet show that he is also considered a "North American Animal Liberation Press Officer" (NAALPO) for the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). On the ALF website it states: "The Animal Liberation Front (A.L.F.), carries out illegal actions against industries who profit from animal exploitation. These actions most often take the form of liberating live animals (from fur farms, slaughterhouses, etc.) or economic sabotage in the form of property destruction."

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) openly state on their website that they endorse ALF activities and donate money to them.

If one looks at PETA's website they will find this statement: As PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk has said, “When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness, and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.”

As you can see, one of the animal rights premises is that humans are just animals like all other animals. Let's take a look and see what the Bible says:

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

This passage from Genesis shows that man was created in God's image and that God set man above all living creatures and gave him rule over them. In fact, Man was created with a spirit because God is a spiritual being and this allows us to communicate with God.

Isaiah 31:3 The Egyptians are man, and not God, and their horses are flesh, and not spirit.

This verse from Isaiah shows that a horse is flesh only and has no spirit like man was given.

Psalms 8:5 Yet you have made him [man] a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

This passage from Psalms again shows that we are created above animals and they are under our rule.

Psalms 32:9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle,

This verse from Psalms tells us that animals are without understanding.

Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

This verse from Matthew tells us that we are of more value than animals.

Matthew 12:11 He said to them, “Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

Here we have a passage from Matthew that emphasizes that we are of much higher value to God than an animal!

2 Peter 2:12 But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction,

This passage in 2 Peter is comparing false prophets and teachers to animals. It says that animals are irrational and creatures of instinct. Although man has the capacity for rational thought and reasoning, some people prefer to behave and reason with their instincts or "feelings" and not strictly hold to what God has instructed us to do in scripture.

Luke 12:4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

This passage in Luke warns us that God sees and knows what is occurring with everything he has created at all times - even sparrows that are worth less than a penny. But Luke assures us that we are of much more value than a sparrow. This again shows we are above animals to God.

There are other verses and passages that one can read that shows that in fact we were created separate and above animals. We are not the same as animals and animals are of very little value to God compared to man. Man was created for God and animals were created for man.

Only limited human reasoning can come to the conclusion that animals and humans are all equal and should have equal rights.
